The Gems of Earth

Hello Homo Sapiens!

Climatique 4 here! I’m ready to unravel the topic we’ve stored for today! And, yes, it’s about one of the most important organisms known to mankind - TREES. Now, most people assume that this trunk of wood benefits humans because of the oxygen it produces, but did you know there’s more to trees than meets the eye?

Trees, right? Such a small word, yet so important for everything.

Trees produce most of the oxygen Earth has in inland areas. 28% of the WORLD’S oxygen is created by these, most of which is the 21% in the atmosphere, showing just how important they are.

Apart from oxygen, trees serve as homes to many species. It’s discovered that 2.3 million living species depend on their habitats for one single tree. Furthermore, trees are the key to creating thousands of medicines for mankind, some of the most famous, being aspirin, quinine, and opiates.

Trees also have many more duties, including the ones in the image below.

Despite having so much importance both on the climate equilibrium and humans, trees and forests’ felling is a constant threat to our environment.

It is estimated that 3.5-7 BILLION trees are cut down EVERY YEAR, leaving a total of 28, 000 species to go extinct in the next years. Every minute of our lives consists of the misuse of tree products as well. Only 17.1% of the wood products we use are recycled, and the rest are burnt in incinerators, harming our atmosphere.

That’s not even the cause of climate change. Many resources point to the fact that the reason for so much global warming is due to deforestation, which is the cutting of trees, Furthermore, trees help the amount of CO2 balance in the atmosphere. Without enough trees, the temperatures are increasing day after day. A bitter cherry on top, since there is so much tree felling, the water vapors in the air are affected massively, and only 4% of our atmosphere has recovered the past YEARS, which is a big deal.

Earth’s beauty is ultimately getting CRUSHED because of humans. Deniers have killed Earth's ecosystem, but as the climatiques, we must clean the mess and give our all, since what comes after sympathy should be empathy!

Our monthly goals for February are:

> PLANT A TREE WHERE YOU CAN -

Near your house, in your institutes, wherever you can! Every planted tree counts as an afforestation.

> THREE R's -

Reuse paper products as much as you can, reduce the amount of wood products you buy to the extent that only necessary things should be brought, and recycle your papers and files!

> BUY CERTIFIED WOOD PRODUCTS -

Read your product labels and look for the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) mark to lower your chances of buying illegally cut wood.

> DO NOT BURN FIREWOOD EXCESSIVELY -

If you have a fireplace, reduce your consumption of firewood and use electric heaters and warm blankets instead to keep cozy on cold nights.

> USE LESS PAPER

85 million tons of paper is wasted per year. Shocking, and devastating. Try to use paper only when needed and remember to use recycled paper as well!

By putting YOUR efforts as an individual, and us putting ours, we’re sure to reduce the amount of destruction caused by deforestation!

  TRIVIA TIDBIT:

>Trees are the longest-living organisms on Earth and never die of old age.

>California holds the record for the oldest living trees. Some of the state’s bristlecone pines and giant sequoias are 4,000-5,000 years old.

>For the first 90% of Earth’s history, trees didn’t even exist!

I hope you read this blog open-heartedly because we need as much help as we can. Let’s stop deforestation together!
