Hello! This is one of the members of the Climatiques, excited for our first blog post!
Climate Change is, in simple words, the way our climate changes. Problem is, it's not changing for good.
According to a report issued by NOAA's 2021 Annual Climate Report, temperatures since 1880 have risen by 0.08 degrees Celsius per decade. However, the average rate of increase per decade since 1981 has been more than double that, 0.18 degrees Celsius per decade!
And for the young'uns who don't speak meteorology, that's bad. Real bad.
But despite the ever-increasing levels of temperature change, there is some smidgen of hope. Us.
Yes, yes, I know we're the wretched species to have caused all this in the first place, but we are also the same species that can prevent and to some extent solve this situation. And you can do something too. Even if you're just a child, you shouldn't let this discourage you.
You can do something too. Even something as trivial as saving energy in our own houses can result in a decreased need for energy from non-renewable resources.
As is clear from this pie chart, less than 1o percent of our energy is derived from renewable resources ( that can be gotten over and over, produce less pollution) while the rest is generated from fossil fuels that are incinerated and pollute the air a lot.
Chances are that the energy for the device you're viewing this article on is also running on non-renewable resources, and as you use more energy, you require more energy, and hence power plants have to use more fossil fuels to accommodate your needs. It would be more effective to shut these plants and replace them with renewable energy plants (solar, wind, HEP) but until this is done, we can do our most by using less energy.
So, to do this, here are some basic rules to guide you:
Replace incandescent lights with LEDs! They use up to 75% less energy and last 25 times longer!
Power down appliances instead of leaving them on standby.
Unplug unused chargers, please!
Adjust your thermostat depending on the weather.
Try to airdry your clothes instead of putting them in the dryer.
Don't put small loads on your dishwasher and laundry, rather put the full load to finish all the clothes/dishes in one go!
Invest in energy-efficient appliances, some expense goes a long way!
Cycle whenever you can, it's good exercise too!
Use natural light and open the curtains! This way, you can get some good Vitamin D too!
Compost your food scraps to reduce waste! This will fertilize the soil in your yard too!
In the end, whatever you do to help this mission, remember a small bit goes a long way!
Don't forget to share this page with others, so they can, too, learn how they can do their fair share for our planet!
Peace out! ✌️
